Absolutely terrified and not coping

Hi, I found out on 17th July that my LLETZ has came back positive for cancer. Originally my smear result showed ? Glandular Neoplasia of the endocervix. Colposcopy carried out followed be LLETZ. Dr wrote to my GP and said ‘colposcopy confirmed probable high grade precancerous changes to the cervix’. She also said nothing abnormal noticed in surrounding area and nothing abnormal when she felt inside.
9 days later I was called into the hospital where cancer was confirmed and a huge whirlwind of information and scan appointments given. I had MRI Sunday and CT Tuesday. MDT meeting isn’t until 30th July so 10days after MRI. Should I have heard something before then? Would they have informed me if they needed further testing or progressed with anything before the MDT if something like stage 4 was on the scan. I’m absolutely terrified. Trying to be normal to keep my children protected and not to worry my family but I’m absolutely drowning in fear. I’m 39 and had spotting in May otherwise have been fine and wouldn’t have known anything. I’m so thankful for any insight or even some coping mechanisms or some real life (not google) experiences of what I’m expecting.

Thank you so much!

  • Hello, and thank you for posting. I'm so sorry you are going through this.

It sounds like the team is springing into action for you to work out exactly what is going on. They will use the results of the tests and scans and the information from the biopsy to discuss you at the MDT and decide what they feel should be the treatment plan. So, I wouldn't have expected you to hear anything until this discussion I had.

It is important to remember that the cervical screening programme is there to catch things early, so it would be unusual for you to be diagnosed now with a stage 4 cervical cancer.

This is a difficult time waiting for news, particularly when you are a carer. MIND has good information on coping with anxiety, and if needed, we have information on talking to children about cancer.

There is also a category called 'living with cancer' on this chat forum, once you have more information, where you can post and hear from others in a similar situation to you.

The Eve Appeal is also there as a women's gynaecological cancer charity if helpful.

Take care, and if you want to speak to the nurses on the helpline then call 0808 800 4040. Lines are open mon-fri, 9-5.

    Sarah.
