Bicalutamide

My dad has been recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer, and started on Bicalutamide around two weeks ago. I've just spoken to him and he's saying he feels tired, dizzy and sick. He also says it's like a 'fog is in the room' when he opens his eyes and closes them again. I've asked him if he thinks if it could be a stomach bug as there's one going round, but he seems sure that it's not. Could it be a side-effect of the medication? He doesn't know what to do as he spoke to the GP yesterday who said it's just 'one of those things' and he can't get in touch with the nurses. He doesn't know what to do, so I've advised he rings 111 and I'm going over to seem him. Any ideas of how to help him please?

  • Hello and thank you for posting,

I am sorry to learn of your dad's Prostate Cancer diagnosis and that he is experiencing a lot of symptoms. This must be a difficult time.

Unfortunately, as nurses not involved in your dad's care, we cannot say what the cause of the symptoms might be or provide a medical opinion. It is possible it could be side effects from bicalutamide, but it's best to clarify this with someone from the team at the hospital who knows his situation.

Hopefully, he will have heard from the nurses at the hospital by now, but if not, I would encourage him to keep trying.

And as you have suggested, if the symptoms are unmanageable, and he feels unwell, it might be worth calling NHS 111 for advice.

I hope your dad can get some support for this soon. Please feel free to contact us again if you need to. You may want to speak with one our nurses on the helpline. We are available between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday and the freephone number to call is 0808 800 4040.

    Jemma
