  • Hello Nbear and thank you for posting,

I am sorry to learn of your situation. This must be a difficult time.

I wondered if you have a nurse specialist, you could speak with who could give you clarity on your situation and the stage of your cancer.

I appreciate this is a worrying time for you with a lot of uncertainty. Everyone is treated individually and only your doctors involved in your care can say what the treatment plan will be and what the aim of the treatment is.

I know it is hard, but try to take one step at a time, try not to overthink things and hopefully, your team will have some answers for you very soon.

In the meantime, please feel free to come back to us. If you would like to talk things through with one of our nurses on the helpline you would be welcome to call us. We are available between 9 am and 5 pm Monday to Friday and the freephone number to call is 0808 800 4040.

    Take care,

    Jemma

  • Hi they still say they haven't a treatment plan my operation was 6 weeks ago and I've had numerous ct, mri abd bloods since then. Anytime I speak to my consultant its were still waiting on bowel drs to confirm plans. All this waiting around is not helping me , im not sleeping or eating cause I have all this in my head. I checked my hospital website and there's a cancer nurse on there should I call them . I just have never been in this position and its a very confusing and unknown time.

    Thank you for your reply

  • Hello Nbear,

l understand where you are and how difficult it is being left in a deep dark hole waiting for the light of some certainty to penetrate the gloom,my spread from the bowel was into the liver. Like you they operated on the secondary first as it was motoring and time was of the essence.

They got back to the bowel but that was 12 weeks later, your body needs a chance to recover before you get the next operation. Its easy to think you are fit enough now to crack on, but its what comes after any bowel proceedure that is a real kicker in somuch as a ;long period of chemo is highly likely and you will need all the recuperation you can get before starting that.

You should take comfort from the fact you are being monitored and assessed in order to give you the very best treatment option. Its difficult to see that when you are kneedeep in a cold dark morass and desparately wanting to get on firm ground.

Right now you can only bring the best you forward by keeping your stress levels down, you cannot alter where you are, but you can affect how you travel forward. When the enemy came knocking on my gates l was damned if l was going to give it any advantage by weakening myself through worry or not eating . You are in the quiet period before dfurther treatments, use it well to build up your strength, you may not be able to for some time in the future so focus on that now.

Its a hard journey you have to travel, allow your body and mind to find the easiest route, you will reap the rewards of doing so.

    go gently forward.

    David

  • Thank you David that gives me some comfort when you explain like that. Im slowly building my strength back up and im trying my best to eat a few small meals a day is better than nothing.

I was the exact same when they said it was cancer , I said well its not living in me anymore so it can leave and that is still my attitude its not winning I have a good life and I intend to stay around and enjoy it more so I do all I can to fight.

Thank you for kk d reply

  • Hello, and thank you for posting.

I'm sorry you are feeling like this.

The waiting around between treatments is difficult, but necessary. It is important that you fully recover from the first treatment, the surgery. If there are plans for chemotherapy and radiation therapy, the doctors will not want to undo the good healing your body has done. These treatments destroy rapidly dividing cells in the body, good and bad, so they would undo where the tissues have healed in the surgical wound if enough time is not given. This also allows time for the bowel specialists to have a Multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meeting about you to go through the best and most suitable next phase.

People are often seen 6 weeks after this type of surgery, before decisions made about what happens next. Try and use this time to get yourself ready physically, mentally and emotionally ready for the next stage of your treatment so you go into it as well as you can be. This on prehabilitation may be useful to read.

Take care, and maybe give your specialist nurse a call to know more about your situation. If you would like to talk things through with the nurses on the helpline the number is 0808 800 4040. Lines are open mon-fri, 9-5.

    Sarah.
