Advanced prostate cancer and weight gain - how can I manage this?

I seem to be putting  on alot of weight  therefore  finding  myself breathless, what is the best way of dealing with  this.

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about your situation and appreciate the concerns you have about the changes to your body.

Weight gain and feeling breathless can happen for a few reasons. It might be linked to the treatment you are having, like hormone therapy or steroids, or reduced physical activity. Some medicines can cause fluid retention or slow down metabolism making it easier to gain weight.

You can read more about the possible causes of breathlessness on our website.

We also have tips on eating a healthy diet. Prostate Cancer UK has some further information on diet and physical activity that may be of use.

The best thing to do is to contact your specialist team at the hospital or your GP about your concerns. They can assess you and advise you further. If you have a specialist nurse (CNS) involved in your care then perhaps they can provide you with further information. You often have to call and leave them a message and they will get back to you.

I hope this is of some use. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind Regards,

    Celene
