Ovarian cancer

My pelvis scan came back borderline, but the internal examination said borderline refer to doctor, my cancer blood test was 35.5. I am seeing the consultant next week if I have cancer does it mean it will be stage 1 if the tests are borderline.

  • Hello Twizzel and thank you for posting

It can be stressful and cause anxiety waiting for tests and test results.

I think you are referring to a borderline ovarian tumour. If I have got this wrong please get back to us.

If a borderline ovarian tumour is found, it means there are abnormal cells that are growing in the tissue that covers the ovary. They are different from ovarian cancer because they do not grow into the supportive tissue of the ovary. Unlike ovarian cancer, they usually grow slowly and in a more controlled way. There is more in-depth information at the hyperlink above.

I hope this reply is useful. Hopefully, you will get more information about your situation at your appointment.

  • Thank you for your swift reply I had seen the borderline condition you refer to but it occurs in 20-40 yr olds and I am 74. Can you clarify what borderline means? Surely you either have cancer or you don’t can a borderline diagnosis develop into cancer, how is a borderline diagnosis monitored?
    Thank you.

  • Hello and thank you for coming back to us.

Borderline ovarian cancer is more common in the 20-40 age range, but that does not mean it doesn't happen to older women too.

As my colleague Jemma explained above, it is not as straightforward as you do or don't have cancer, as different types of cancers behave in different ways.

This type of ovarian cancer is usually not as difficult to manage as the more common one, as it does not act in the same way.

In most cases, it is removed by surgery, and that is all the treatment needed, but this said, your hospital team will go through what they feel is the best course of action for you.

Take care and if you want to talk things through with the nurses then call 0808 800 4040. Lines are open, mon-fri, 9-5.

    Sarah.
