Ann - question about diarrhoea

I’m just looking for some information. My husband is currently going through chemo as he has terminal cancer. He’s struggling with severe nausea and diarrhoea, he has medication for both but not seeming to help and he’s loosing weight because he’s not eating. I get him to drink and give him re hydration drinks to keep up his fluid levels. The thing is he’s been eatIng bananas and I was wonder could that be making his diarrhoea worse. I never thought because they’re supposed to be good to help with diarrhoea.

please can you help

  • Hi Rust and thank you for your post.

I am very sorry to hear about your husband’s situation, and I can appreciate you want to do all you can to help him.

Side effects of chemotherapy, such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea are not pleasant. For most people, chemotherapy side effects are temporary and disappear once treatment has finished.

We do have tips for coping with diarrhoea on our website, which may be helpful for you to read

Bananas are generally considered a good food for diarrhoea due to their pectin and potassium content.

However, they can also cause diarrhoea in some people due to their sugar content. Bananas have high levels of fructose, sorbitol, and soluble fibre in bananas which can have a laxative effect when consumed in large quantities.

The riper the banana the sweeter it is and therefore the higher sugar content. Maybe keep to bananas that are slightly green rather than black. For most healthy adults, eating one or two bananas per day is considered a moderate and generally safe intake.

Maybe you could talk to his hospital specialist about trying different medication or ways to help with his nausea and diarrhoea.

He may also like to try meal replacements such as build up or fortisips, which you can get on prescription.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5 pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards
