Appointment Wait for Follow Up. What is the normal wait time?

I have ovarian cancer, I had an omentectomy just over three weeks ago, this has been sent off for testing.
I’ve had my follow up appointment through for the end of the month. Would they want to see me sooner if it was more bad news? What is the normal wait time for follow up appointments?

  • Hi Alps1 and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear about your situation and appreciate what a difficult time this must be for you.

It's understandable to be anxious about the results of your omentectomy and the timing of your follow-up appointment.

While the majority of individuals obtain their biopsy results within a timeframe of two to three weeks, this duration may differ among various NHS Trusts.

I believe the timing of your appointment is due to your surgery. It can take 6-8  weeks for your body to recover from abdominal surgery and having an appointment sooner may not be beneficial as the body needs time to heal and adjust.

Also, if you require additional treatment such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy, it is recommended to start either of these treatments approximately 6 to 8 weeks after surgery to allow your body sufficient time to heal, so seeing you sooner may not change the timing of your treatment whatever the results.

People often experience a whole range of emotions when waiting for results. We know that talking can often relieve some of the distress and anxiety. There's some useful advice about talking therapies and how to access them on the NHS website. In the meantime,   Anxiety UK has a good website with helpful tips on how to deal with anxiety in these situations.

Maggies are also a great source of support for patients and can also provide counselling and talking therapies to help people process what they are going through and help people move forward.

I hope this helps and you know more about your situation soon.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5 pm Monday to Friday.

     Kind regards
