Swollen Lymph node in child

Hi, my son is 13 years old. I took him to our GP in April as he has a swollen lymph node in his neck. The Dr said to go back if it didn’t go down in around 3 weeks.

He had a paediatrics outpatients appointment (he has a number of medical conditions and is autistic) in May. The Dr identified another swollen lymph node but no cause and prescribed a course of antibiotics and said for me to get in touch if this didn’t resolve so they could arrange bloods.

I was trying to arrange this through paediatrics but nobody would get back to me. I therefore took him back to the GP in June who said he would arrange bloods and an ultrasound of his neck.

We have a scan booked for 15th July, but I’ve been chasing an appointment for bloods. Both the GP surgery and Paediatrics are saying that the earliest bloods can be done is 29th July. Over the past few weeks, he’s become more and more fatigued and has now started vomiting. He’s also complaining of shortness of breath and chest pain.

I really don’t feel comfortable waiting another three week for bloods to be done, especially as his general health is deteriorating.

Is it appropriate for it to take more than 3 months to get blood tests, or should things be done sooner? Is there anything I can do? I think I’m particularly anxious as I have some knowledge of Lymphoma as my youngest son who was 5 at the time underwent surgery for histology to rule it out a couple of years ago.

  • Hi there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your son's symptoms and the worry it is causing you. Do remember childhood cancers are rare and hopefully there is a less serious cause, other than cancer for this.

Unfortunately no one here can say what the matter might be and it is best to update the GP about any new or worsening symptoms.

The doctor may be able to arrange for him to have urgent bloods carried out so do ask if this is a possibility.

If however you feel he is deteriorating out of hours and needs to be assessed in an emergency call NHS111 or attend the nearest A+E department.

    Best wishes

    Naomi

  • Thanks so much. 111 sent us to A&E and he’s had a chest x-ray and just waiting for bloods. It’s absolutely mind blowing that 5-6 weeks is the quickest appointment for paediatric bloods .
