Caring for a friend with advanced prostate cancer

Hi,

I care for my friend who is 84 with advanced prostrate cancer.

he is in lower back pain and shoulder pain. A CT scan shows mets to the upper spine. He is hardly eating. Drinking but not as much as in the past. He’s lost loads of weight. Walking is becoming painful and harder. He has bad kidneys and very high blood pressure. He is now only on HT.  His PSA was 3.77 last July and as of June it was 18.

My questions are

Will a CT scan miss smaller mets?

is this looking like nearing end of life?

what should I be expecting.

I’m caring for him on my own and it is getting harder.
thank you!

Julie

  • Hello and thanks for your enquiry,

    I can appreciate your concern.

Unfortunately, I can't comment on his overall condition and outlook as a health professional needs to assess him in person. A CT scan may show cancer progression but wont show microscopic cells in tiny amounts.

It does sound like the time has come for you to approach other services for support and arrange a care package. He will have to agree to this as well.

You can organise to get a needs assessment done by the local social services. There is more detailed information about this on the

NHS website and also on the Age UK website

Macmillan cancer support have information about looking after someone with cancer.

If he is not eating or drinking, then his GP does need to be informed and they may well come and do a home visit. The GP can also refer him to the local district nursing team who can come and do a nursing care assessment as well.

I hope that this is useful,

    Best wishes,

    Vanda

  • Huge thanks.

Hea such a stubborn man and refuses any help unless it’s from me. I know he’s in pain and I do get him to take the odd painkiller the doctor gave him.

His hips are agony. Yesterday he was struggling to walk. If I suggest any help he goes mad. I think the only time he’ll accept other help is when he has no choice.

    Thanks again.

    Julie
