Pelvic Ultrasound and Vaginal Ultrasound

Hi I had a pelvic ultrasound and vaginal ultrasound this morning before I have my preventative surgery to remove my ovaries, fallopian tubes and womb as my sister has had advanced ovarian cancer and she and myself and some other family members have a mutated BRCA 2 gene.  When I had the external ultrasound the sonographer said she could see my womb was fine but could hardly see the ovaries.  She then did the internal ultrasound and said she couldn’t see my ovaries at all. However  she said it was reassuring because if there are problems with the ovaries they are usually large and more easily seen.  She said it may be because I’m 55 and post menopausal.  I am wondering now will they just go ahead and do my surgery or will I need any other tests because they couldn’t visualise them.  Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • Hello, and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear about your relatives and their cancer diagnosis, and the BRCA 2 gene trait.

I am afraid that, as I am not part of your team, I do not know what they will do next, but I am sure you will soon be aware of the plan.

It isn't unusual for ovaries not to be visible on a scan. This can be because the bowel could be in the way, or the ovaries have shrunk due to age/menopause.

Take care, and hopefully you hear more soon.

    Sarah.
