Radiotherapy

Dear All, I am due to start 21 days of radiotherapy in just over a weeks’ time and would really appreciate any tips or advise.

What cream would you advise, and do I start using it now on the area or wait for after the first session.

Any other tips would be greatly appreciated xxx

  • Hello and thanks for your enquiry,

You don't mention where on the body you are having radiotherapy. You can use your normal skin creams up until the day of the radiotherapy planning appointment, and then stop applying cream once you start the radiotherapy course. The radiotherapy team will have a skin care protocol and will advise you of skin care. Generally, you don't apply skin creams as this can affect the radiotherapy beams onto the skin. You can wash near the area and dab dry. Sometimes markings are applied to the skin which are not washed off during the treatment.

The radiotherapy treatment team monitor you, and if the skin becomes red or sensitive, they can advise on skin care then.

We have a general section on radiotherapy on our website and if this is relevant to your situation (it may not be), we also have a section on breast radiotherapy

    I hope that this helps,

    Best wishes,

    Vanda
