Husband finished immunotherapy for Bladder Cancer a month ago. Worried about possible side effects he's experiencing

My husband has completed immunotherapy for a non invasive but aggressive bladder cancer.  He developed terrible lower abdomen pain followed by passing an awful lot of blood and clots in his urine. It was very dark in colour.last immunotherapy was a month ago. Is this normal ?

I rang emergency GP who said the Urology department are the ones to deal with this. It is difficult to speak to the specialist nurses who take only voice messages and ring back ,sometimes.

What can I do to help him?

  • Hello Appledore and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your husband. It is difficult for me to comment on your husband's symptoms without being involved in his care. I would contact the urology secretary asking for their advice. Often specialist nurses are tied up in clinic and usually get back to patients and relatives when they get back to their office. You could always leave another message on their phone if they don't get back to you.

You could also get in touch with Pals.

If your husband continues to have abdominal pain and the blood continues then I would contact NHS 111 as your husband may need to be seen in the hospital.

I do hope that you know more soon.

I would speak to the hospital in the first instance but if you would like to chat to the nurses on the helpline you are very welcome to give us a call. The number to ring is Freephone 0808 800 40404 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine

  • Thank you Catherine, I have left a message with the nurse specialist this morning . Still waiting for a reply. My husband is lying in bed as he feels the most comfortable there. He still has pain in his bladder area and feels nauseous so isn't eating much and said he feels weak.

I will leave another message at the Hospital.

If he worsens I will ring 111 thanks again for your support.

    Yvonne.
