Another lump/mass in breast following breast cancer surgery and radiotherapy

In April I had a 2.1cm cancerous lump removed from the upper inner part of my right breast, which was followed by radiotherapy.

It appears to be healing well, however I’ve now developed or been left with a large mass in the same region where the cancerous lump was.

I have been in contact with the breast care nurse who told me that this is my “new normal”?

Is it common to have another lump following breast cancer surgery, and is this normal?

Thanks in advance

  • Hello, and thank you for posting.

I am sorry to learn that you have needed to have treatment for breast cancer. I hope you are recovering well.

It is common after a lumpectomy and radiotherapy to have fibrosis or scarring, which can cause a lump in the breast and cause the skin to feel thicker and harder.

I was unsure if anyone from your hospital team had seen the breast lump, and if you are concerned whether you could ask for it to be checked out.

I hope this helps. Do get back to us with any further questions. If you would like to speak with one our nurses on the helpline we are available 9-5 Monday to Friday and the freephone number to call is 0808 800 4040,

  • Hi Jemma, thank you for getting back to me.

No, I was told that the lump was my “new normal” over the telephone and was not offered the opportunity to come into the breast clinic to have it examined.

Would it be the breast clinic I request this or should I go to my doctors?

    Thanks in advance
