My wife Geraldine has anal cancer stage 4 and has a stoma

My wife has anal cancer stage 4 and has a stoma she had 22 sessions of chemotherapy and just recently finished five and a half weeks of radiotherapy with chemo tablets also, the objective was to shrink the tumour in her anus because she can’t sit because it’s very close to the opening she obviously has had skin burning etc with the radiation but the pain in her anus as got much worse after finishing the radiotherapy treatment , she has some mucus but tired all the time no energy, she says she can’t feel the tumour like before the radiotherapy but then why is she getting so much pain now if it’s shrunk? Tomorrow she’s going for a CT scan then the day after a MRI a appointment follow up as been made for two weeks after with the oncologist to discuss the results,

thank you

Peter.

  • Hello Peter,

as someone who had 6 weeks of chemo/radio l can tell you l was tired during the treatment and absolutely beggared in the months following it, and l did not have 22 weeks of chemo beforehand, trust me your wife has gone through an awful lot so its no wonder she is tired with no energy. It will improve but slowly.

As for the pain, mine was in the lower bowel, imagine if you had a cyst on your arm and you cut it out or killed it off, the cyst would not hurt, its the surrounding tissue and nerves that do and have to recover.

l had the stoma but l still had rectal pain for a good while afterwards, the one thing l learnt is that the bowel does not like being interfered with, and unlike muscle tissue which has a good blood supply and can heal quick, the bowel is a very different beast taking longer to get there.

l hope your wifes condition will continue to improve,

    David

  • Thank you Davei i appreciate your support and advice

    Peter.

  • Hi there Peter and thank you for your email

I am very sorry to hear about your wife's situation and appreciate how difficult it can be seeing a loved one go through treatment and experiencing unpleasant and painful side effects.

As others have already shared with you on here that your wife's body has undergone extensive treatment. It is quite normal for radiotherapy side effects to continue for a couple of weeks after treatments finish, before they start to improve.

Do make sure your wife is taking the advice of her doctors in terms of pain relief, and if this isn't working, let them know.

It is good to hear she has some scans booked in the next few days, so hopefully, once the results are in, she might start feeling a little brighter.

I hope things improve for her soon and she can get some relief from this pain and discomfort.

Do get back in touch if needed, or if you prefer, do give us a call on 0808 800 4040, weekdays 9-5.

    Best wishes to you both

    Naomi

  • Many thanks Naomi we are at the hospital now waiting for the mri appointment it’s just that the pain discomfort in her anus has got much worse she cannot sit at all we do hope it’s more related to radiation treatment and not the tumour but we won’t know until we see our oncologist in two weeks time I am really struggling emotionally but trying to be strong for her

    thank you

    Peter.
