Nipple discomfort following Vacuum Assisted Biopsy

I had a vacuum assisted biopsy two weeks ago. This found multiple papillomas and the consultant is treating this as papillomatosis.
I am awaiting the date for a vacuum assisted excision to check for malignancy in the surrounding tissue.
I was told the breast may be bruised post the biopsy and the initial anaesthetic was not fully effective so three were administered in total. All three injections were inserted to the lower part of my breast with the biopsy to the top so I expected and understand the bruising above and below the nipple. My nipple is incredibly sensitive though since the procedure and I’ve discovered any material touching it has the effect of a burning sensation. Is this normal and how long does it normally last please?

  • Hello and thanks for your enquiry,

You may have had some superficial nerve endings irritated by the procedure, so the burning sensation is a result of that. Recovery can vary, anything from several weeks to a couple of months possibly. Do discuss with your breast team if it persists or changes.

I hope that it gets better for you soon,

    Best wishes,

    Vanda
