Cervical cancer after effects

Hi,

I had a full radical hysterectomy and lymph node removal approx 2.5 years ago for stage 1b1 cervical cancer. The operation took approx 3-4hours to remove my cervix, tubes, ovaries, top of the vaging and surrounding tissue etc. I was 43 at the time.

On top of the surgery and cancer diagnosis, I also obviously had an instant surgical menopause which has been horrendous.

After approx 6 weeks I was allowed HRT (oestrogen only) but only at a small dose.   I also suffer with an under active thyroid for which I take levothyroxine.

2 and a half years post op and treatment and I have gained 2.5 stone, severely thinning head hair, broken my leg and generally have aches in my back and right hip. Should I ask for bone density checks or could this be something more sinister?  (My mom, Nan and grandad had osteoarthritis and my dad has rheumatoid arthritis flare ups)

  • Hello Li-lou, and thank you for posting.

I am sorry to learn that you are experiencing symptoms and that you have broken your leg; this must be difficult.

We cannot say what the cause of your symptoms is. There could be many causes, but only a doctor who can assess you can give you a diagnosis. As they will know your situation if you are in touch with a specialist cancer nurse (CNS), it might be worth contacting them for advice, or you could discuss with the GP about the possibility of having a DEXA scan to measure your bone density.

I hope you can get some support with this soon.

Please do get back to us if you have any further questions. If you would like to speak with one of our nurses, we are available between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday and the freephone number to call is 0808 800 4040,

    Take care,

    Jemma
