Pain in Bowel

Hello, during admission to hospital for a diverticulities flare up I underwent a CT scan of my bowel and I am now on urgent pathway for a colonoscopy in two weeks time. I have also completed a FIT test which came back at 16.9. but my question concerns pain in my bowel, cramping which is very severe followed by defecation. What is the best way to control this pain as it makes me feel physically sick. Also the urgency to go to the toilet when the pain comes on. I am a nursing student and should be on placement but have been on sick leave due to return tomorrow, but I am worried that I will experience this pain and urgency when on placement. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hello Smiler1

After the urge you get the surge., its one of lifes little joys after bowel surgery. The irritating thing is that it did not arrive with cancer but only after the treatment.Ten years on l still get cramping but at least its now like a doorbell, and l have time to go and open the door

The one for sure is the bowel is control and you have little say in the matter if it decides a movement is going to happen

Buscopan can help if you are experiencing a reccuring cycle, but unless you are capable of seeing into the future you don't know when to take one until its upon you. The danger there is that you can be lulled into taking them as a routine to get you out of trouble, l have had issues with bowel blockages, and you do not want to go there

The only other thing l can offer is that stress will make it all the worse, difficult l know but perhaps you need to make those around you aware and take the pressure off yourself

    Good luck,

    David

  • Hello Smilier1 and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to learn of the symptoms you are experiencing and that you are now waiting to have a colonoscopy. I can imagine it is a stressful and anxious time.

We cannot recommend medications. The best person to discuss this with would be your GP, as they are familiar with your situation. Alternatively, your local pharmacist may be able to prescribe something for you.

I hope you can get some help with this as soon as possible.
