Endometrial hyperplasia

Hi, I am post menopausal on HRT and had endometrial hyperplasia about 2 years ago. Nothing suspicious on biopsy and hysteroscopy. I was advised to have a Mirena IUD which I accepted.
Fast forward to today and I have had an USS which shows repeat hyperplasia despite having the IUD in place. I’m very worried now because everything I have read says that the Mirena is so effective at reducing and preventing hyperplasia, so how has this happened again? I’m so confused as the GP doesn’t know and I can’t find anything on line about why this has happened again and what this means.
Any info, insights or experiences that might help me understand what’s happening would be much appreciated. I am waiting for an appointment for another hysteroscopy and biopsy and very frightened.

  • Hello Gwenie and thank you for your post,

It can be a stressful and anxious time waiting for tests and test results.

Everyone's response to the mirena coil is individual and there may be many reasons why it hasn't been effective, it can depend on a woman's age, whether or not they have gone through menopause, and whether there are other health conditions.

Unfortunately, until you have the hysteroscopy no one can tell you what the reason is. I appreciate there is uncertainty which can be hard.

I hope you can get some answers soon. In the meantime, if you would like to talk things through with one of the nurses on the helpline we are available between 9am and 5 pm Monday to Friday and the freephone number to call is 0808 800 4040,

    Take care,

    Jemma
