chronic lymphocytic leukaemia

my husband was told he had acquired hemophilia and has been in hospital 6 weeks. he has now had a letter saying he has CLL. Does this normally happen and at 78 . he cant walk or sit in a chair. will treating him improve his situation. will it be a lot longer in hospital. Sorry to trouble you but I dont seem to be told anything from the nurses. This letter was dated 10th june and I visited and spoke to the nurse treating him on the 10th. So she should have seen a report before it was posted.

  • Hi Doggybag and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear about your husband’s situation and appreciate what a difficult time this must be for both of you.

Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL)  is more common in men in their seventies.

After a cancer diagnosis, the case is discussed in a Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) meeting where all the different doctors involved in your husband’s care discuss his case and work out a treatment plan.

Your husband’s hospital specialist will discuss with you and your husband what treatment options is best for your husband.

Your husband may need to stay a little longer in hospital until the hospital specialist can stabilise him.

Treatment may improve his condition, depending on the underlying cause of his inability to sit or walk. If fatigue or weakness is the issue, then treatment may lead to improvement.

Most treatments for CLL can be given as an outpatient or tablets which can be taken at home.

I hope this helps and you know more about your husband’s situation soon.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards
