Breast cancer that has spread to the bones in the elderly

My 84 year old mum has just been diagnosed a couple of days ago. The doctor informed us that it's a significant mass in her breast and there's evidence of it in the armpit and lymph nodes. Six weeks ago my mum got a back fracture but didn't have a fall. We think the cancer may have spread to her bones. We're waiting for a follow up hospital appointment to learn how bad it is. I'm just wondering if chemotherapy/radiation treatments are beneficial to an 84 year old who isn't in great health?

  • Hello Lytham 45 and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your mum. I can understand that you don't want your mum to receive treatment if she is not in very good health.

Every patient is treated very individually. Before your mum's team of doctors decide what treatment is in your mum's best interest they need to first get as much information about her cancer. Her doctors will also assess her general health for example how well her liver and kidneys are working as these can be affected if they don't work so well. The doctors will also check how well her heart is working.

There are other drugs that her doctors may consider such as hormone treatment (if they are suitable) which may be far gentler and may help to help control the cancer.

The doctors will take in to account what your mum wants. Try not to think too far ahead.

Your mum may have a breast care nurse and you and your mum may find it helpful to talk through any concerns with them.

You may find it helpful to attend any appointments with your mum so you can help support her in any decisions that are made.

I hope that you know more soon.

Do give the nurses a ring if you want to talk any of this through. The lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm and the number is Freephone 0808 800 4040.

    All the best,

    Catherine

  • Hi Catherine,

    Many thanks for your reply.

Sorry, I may have typed my message incorrectly. I'm not for or against my mam getting treatment, I just wanted to understand the pros and cons when you're elderly and not in good health. Whatever the doctors suggest is what we'll be happy to do.

    Thanks for your kind words
