Lymph node biopsy today

Hi, I got a call last night to go in for a biopsy today. They didn’t give me any information except the appointment time. I asked what the biopsy involves and she started saying that I went for a scan and now need a biopsy and didn’t really answer my question. I have looked at the info on this website but it would be good if someone can talk me through it. I understand it’s short notice and I probably won’t get a reply in time but it’s worth a try!

I had a mammogram 6 weeks ago and it was clear but the ultrasound show enlarged lymph node in my left breast. They weren’t too worried and said to come back for another ultrasound in 6 weeks, this one show it had not gotten any bigger but hadn’t gotten any smaller either, they still didn’t seem bothered by it and said I could go and they’d call if needed.

They next evening I got a call about going in for the biopsy and they want me to go in the next day (today).

It would be great if anyone can just give me a bit of information about the biopsy or any reassurance would be great as I’m petrified of needles!

  • Hi Angelstar1182

I am sorry to hear that you are worried about your lymph node biopsy.

I recognise that you may be reading this response following the biopsy procedure. However, I sincerely hope that this is not the situation.

lymph node biopsy is a procedure where a sample of lymph node tissue is taken for examination under a microscope. This can be performed as a fine needle aspiration. A needle is used to extract a sample of cells or tissue from the lymph node. This is often guided by ultrasound or imaging techniques.

If you make the hospital staff aware of your fear of needles, then they can apply a local anaesthetic to numb the area where the abnormal lymph node is located. This may sting slightly.

There are numerous causes for enlarged lymph nodes, and I would feel a little reassured knowing that they have not increased in size.

I hope you get the results soon and everything is ok
