Mirena coil removal / breast cancer

Hi,

I have oestrogen and progesterone sensitive breast cancer. Im

52 and in perimenopause / menopause .
It’s a 3 cm lump and awaiting what surgery I’m going to have based on MRI and another ultrasound.
I stopped my HRT 12 days ago ( when I was diagnosed) and suffering the full on menopause symptoms now. I haven’t had my mirena coil removed but been advised to .
im reluctant to do so and I’m wondering if I really need it removed ? My understanding is that the progesterone in the mirena coil is localised to the area it’s in.

ive also been advised ( if it’s androgen sensitive which they are currently testing ) to stop my Testosterone . This again I don’t want to do as it helps with my menopause symptoms also.

I have to consider risk v benefit and so I’m wondering what research evidence is actually available to give me some statistics so that I can make a more informed / educated decision . Im

a nurse myself.

  • Hi and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your situation and appreciate you wishing to understand more about risks associated with HRT and the mirena coil.

We have some information about IUS systems including the Mirena coil on our website. As you can see whilst only a small about of hormone is released locally, it isn't usually recommended in women who have a hormone sensitive breast cancer.

Likewise there is information about HRT and cancer risk.

It is a complicated subject and unfortunately it is difficult to quantify any one's exact risk. It is important to weigh up the risks versus the benefits of any medication or treatment and this should also be in discussion with your own specialist team. They are in the best position to advise you about your individual risk and what is or isn't possible in terms of HRT.

You may also find it helpful to take a look at our pages about coping with sex hormone symptoms.

Do speak with your consultant about this when you next see them to decide what is best for you, given your circumstances.

    Wishing you all the best

    Naomi
