Bladder cancer and BCG side effects.

My husband is due to start receiving the BCG treatment for bladder cancer and there are a couple of points we would like clarified please.

I had TB as a young child, I am now in my mid 70's, is there any risk of TB again?

Having read about the actual treatment and possible side effects are there any risks to someone who has COPD and Emphysema seeing that there could be symptoms of flu to the patient?

I am asking because I want to be fit enough to care for my husband and I don't want to risk breathing difficulties which I do when I have a cough or cold or chest infection. Thank you for any clarification. CeeDee1

  • Hello CeeDee1 and thanks for your post,

If you look at the information on our website about this treatment it has tips for minimising the risk to yourself and your husband.

For up to 6 hours after treatment men should make sure that they sit down whilst passing urine, pouring half a pint of bleach down the toilet and leaving for 15 minutes and making sure that your husband washes his genital area after passing urine.

I am sure that if you both take the necessary precautions that any risk will be kept at a minimum.

When your husband goes for his first treatment do let them know about any concerns that you may have and so hopefully they can reassure you both.

Remember after 6 hours the BCG should have been expelled from his body.

    I do hope this helps.

Do give us a ring if you want to talk things through.
