Timeline - have the checks for possible cancer recurrence changed from 5 to 10 years?

I recently had an appointment for a vault smear following a radical hysterectomy in 2023. The consultant mentioned the possibility of recurrence and for that reason I would have periodic checks for 10 years from the date of the operation. I was under the assumption it was generally 5 years - has this changed?

  • Hello and thanks for your enquiry,

There are different follow up protocols for certain types of cancer, and situations. The current guidelines for having vault smears done after a hysterectomy is up to 10 years. This would have been based on current research as to what would be the best practice.

You can always ask your GP or gynaecology care team about this, at your next appointment.

    I hope that this helps,

    Best wishes,

    Vanda
