Mammogram recall

Hi, I received a letter today to say that I have to go to hospital to have further tests done following a mammogram (my second, I am 53).  I am very worried as I have been on HRT for nearly five years. Some other factors, I was very slim when I had the first mammogram done and have gained back some weight, does this affect the result? I cannot feel anything that does not feel normal.

  • Hello ArabellaA and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation. It is difficult to say why they need more tests. There can be any number of reasons including the need to take more mammogram pictures particularly if there was an area that wasn't clear. They may have found an area of your breast that needs further investigations but without being involved in your care it is difficult to say more.

Breast Cancer Now have some information for women who are recalled after a mammogram.

I do hope that all will be well. Do give the nurses a ring on the helpline if you want to talk things through.

The number to ring is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine

  • Hi Arabella,

As our CRUK nurse, Catherine, said, there are any number of reasons for a mammogram recall, not all of them sinister. If this was your second routine mammogram, there will only be 1 previous mammogram, to compare the image to, or the image may not be all that clear. I have been recalled after a mammogram in the past and nothing abnormal was found. However, pain does not accompany many breast lesions, so many people are unaware that there is anything awry.

I do hope that nothing untoward is found. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you Jolamine. Trying to stay positive but also feeling a bit sick with stress. Mammogram's a blunt instrument I suppose.

  • Hi Arabella,

It may not feel like it right now, but if there is something untoward there, you are as well to find it now and not further down the line. I may be wrong, but I don't think that your weight gain will affect the result in any adverse way.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • I had the recall appt today and it appears (hopefully) to be 'fibrocystic tissue' which is hormone-sensitive and can occur in women over 50 using HRT apparently. They took a sample with a needle to test to check the cells. Thank you for your help and reassurance yesterday.

  • Hi Arabella,

This sounds reassuring. When did they say that you should get your results, from the sample they took today?

Please keep in touch and let us know how it goes.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
