Struggling to decide the best treatment

Hi,

I have prostae cancer gleason score of 3+4. I have been offered many of the treatments. I am trying to decide between brachytherapy and the external beam radiotherapy. I am 56 so wondering if one is slightly better than the other for long term outcomes?

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

I am sorry to learn of your diagnosis, this must be a difficult time for you.

There is no overall best treatment for early prostate cancer (the cancer has not spread beyond the prostate gland). They have different side effects, and so the decision is often based on a person's situation, lifestyle, and the impact the side effects may have on their life. You may have seen this already, we have general information about radiotherapy which includes external beam and brachytherapy.

If you are having difficulty with making a decision, do let your team at the hospital know. Hopefully, you have a specialist nurse (CNS) you can contact. You would also be welcome to talk things through with one of our nurses on the helpline. We are available between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday and the freephone number to call is 0808 800 4040.

Please feel free to come back to us for any further information or support.

    kind regards,

    Jemma
