Stage 4 bowel cancer

My husband has stage 4 bowel cancer, he has had 2 different chemotherapy treatments and neither have worked.  The consultant seems to be implying that he might be looking to quality of life rather than trying another combination of chemo.  It has spread to the liver and the last scan showed that possibility of new site in the lymph nodes at the back of the stomach.  She couldnt provide a definitive timescale however she said possibly a year!!!  I have been researching and most state up to 5, is there a possibility that she is wrong?

  • Hi there and thanks for the post

I am so sorry to hear about your husbands situation, this must be such a difficult time for you.

It is very upsetting to be told that there isn't much more can be done in terms of treatment. At times like this it is understandable to want to know what the future may look like and what time your husband may have left.

The specialist doctor involved in your husbands care is in the best position to give a time frame. This is usually based on the extent of the cancer and the doctors experience of other similar patients.

Some people live beyond their prognosis whereas others may sadly come sooner than expected.

The statistics available for survival rates of different cancer are reported in 1,5 and 10 year timeframes. It is however impossible for anyone to know how they fit into statistics. This is because statistics don't take into account individual patient circumstances such as health and fitness levels or what treatment they have had and their response.

As time goes one the doctor may be able to give a clearer picture about what is to come but for now it is important to make the most of each day and ensure your husband has the best quality of life.

I hope this is helpful but do get back in touch if you need to. You are also welcome to call us on 0808 800 4040, we are here weekdays 9-5.

    Best wishes

    Naomi
