PSA Reading

My husband has been called into GP surgery for blood results. GP thinks he has cancer of the prostate & bones because of back ache & 600 PSA readings. He is being sent for a biopsy.
Does this mean that the cancer is in his lymph nodes & is spreading through his bones & is terminal?

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I can understand how stressful this must be waiting to find out what all this must mean for your husband.

Your husband may well have an MRI so the doctors can identify an area that may need to be biopsied. Once they have taken a biopsy this will take a couple of weeks before the results come back. There are many different tests that are done on any tissue that is removed from the body.

In the first instant your husband's GP will probably refer him to a urologist.

There are different tests that your husband may have before the doctors can tell you more.

Try if you can not to over think it for now.

The doctors need to get as much information as they can, before they can reach any conclusions.

Once all the results are back each potential cancer patient is discussed in a large formal meeting and all the doctors involved in his care discuss all the different tests to establish if there is a cancer and how it is best treated.

You are welcome to ring and discuss any of this with one of the helpline nurses.

The number to ring is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine

  • Huge thanksCatherine.

our minds are on over drive with such high PSA reading of 664 & liver serum AP levels of 933. My husband is struggling with back pain & we are looking forward to the diagnosis & treatment in the hope that this will ease the back pain.
Any ideas of the time span from tests to diagnosis to treatment please?

  • Hello and thank you for your further post,

Waiting for tests, test results and hospital appointments can be a stressful and anxious time.

Your husband will have an urgent referral so hopefully you will hear from the hospital quite quickly, if you haven't heard anything within a couple of weeks it is worth going back to the GP to chase this up.

There are target waiting times that have been set to get diagnoses and to start treatment as soon as possible, but there can be periods where you may feel you are waiting a long time and that nothing is happening. Waiting for tests and test results, can take time, which can be a difficult and frustrating experience.

The team at the hospital may be able to give you more of an idea of how long this will take as it can vary from hospital to hospital.

Once all the results are known and if cancer is diagnosed, there will be an MDT meeting (multidisciplinary meeting) where all health professionals including a surgeon who treats bladder, kidney and prostate issues, oncologists (cancer specialists), radiographers, and specialist nurses meet to discuss a person's case and plan treatment.

In the meantime, hopefully, the GP has prescribed pain relief for your husband. It can be trial and error getting it right as everyone is different, do let the GP know if this is not being managed.

I hope you can get some answers soon and that your husband can get relief from the pain. Please feel free to get back to us.

    Take care,

    Jemma
