Lung scans for smokers Age 55 and over

Recently my husband had a lung scan. He's 59. He was previously a smoker. The lungs tests are primarily for people age 55 and over but I am 53 and my mum has lung cancer and my brother died 2 days a from lung cancer but it says I need to be 55 to have this test who would I speak to in regards to having this done because I am an ex smoker. Any advice will be much appreciated. Thank you

  • Hello, and thank you for posting

I'm so sorry to hear about how cancer has affected your life. When people we love are ill or die, it is so difficult and makes us worry about our health.

The lung checks are for those with a history of smoking and start at 55, so you are right in that you do not currently fit the criteria. Do speak to your GP about your concerns and any symptoms that worry you, and they will investigate if needed.

When we lose people to cancer, particularly if it happens to be a similar diagnosis, it is not unusual to feel there must be a hereditary or familial link. We have more information on this and the risks and causes of lung cancer on our website.

Take care of yourself, and if you feel that you need support with your grieving, do speak to CRUSE, a UK-based bereavement charity.

If you want to speak to the nurses on the helpline, the number is 0808 800 404. Lines are open on mon-fri, 9-5.

    Sarah.
