Advice please - having to wait over the time frame for my BCC referral. What can I do?

Hi I was diagnosed end of January with a nodular and infiltrative basal cell carcinoma on the side of my nose.  Treatment advised as Mohs surgery, referral sent to main hospital.  After chasing several times I now have an appointment for 27th July just for the consultant and then looking at 3 to 6 months for surgery.

I have contacted the original dermatology department as the area is definately getting bigger and deeper and also still bleeds and is sore.  I emailed up to date pictures but with no response.

I have read about the 18 week time limit, I am now 30 weeks if I have to wait til July.  Any advise please.

  • Hi Cocoa and thank you for your chat.

I was sorry to read about your situation.

I appreciate waiting any length of time to be treated is very stressful.

Basal cell carcinomas (BCC) are the most common type of skin cancer that typically grow very slowly, rarely spreads, and are rarely serious.

Treatment to remove a BCC isn't regarded as urgent and people often have to wait several months for treatment. You can read more about this by clicking here.

In the meantime, all I can really suggest is that you talk about your concerns with your GP. It may be possible for you to transfer to a hospital with a shorter waiting list for surgery. Although we are aware that most dermatology departments are very busy.

It may be possible to be placed on a cancellation list. This allows you to be accommodated if any surgeries are cancelled.

If you have not yet done so, it may be helpful to contact the hospital's Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS)

There is always the option of going private. I'm afraid I don't know how much it would cost. But in most hospitals now there is a Private Patient's Officer who may be able to advise on this further. The Private Health website has information about private hospitals in the UK and may also be able to give you some ideas.

I hope you can get this sorted out soon.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards

    Tina

  • Hi thanks for your reply Tina.  I have been in touch with the original Department and sent them some up to date pictures so will wait and see what they said.  Going private would be approx £5,000 which is not an option at the moment.

    Thanks again
