Test results

Good morning...

My partner has just received her test results back from the GP regarding Quantitv faecal immunotherapy test. Apparently the reference range is 0 - 9, but the results show 24. We have been advised this is cancer, however we haven't a clue what this means. What options do we have.... is this a very high level ? Is it progressive? Where do we go from here ?

The GP will Apparently call us back in 2 weeks, but that's just too long a wait, without knowing what to do.

Any advise will be very welcome.

Thank you.

  • Hi there and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about your partner's situation and appreciate what a worrying time this must be for you both.

A positive FIT test means that microscopic blood has been detected in the stools. Whilst this warrants further urgent investigation through tests such as a colonoscopy ( camera looking at the bowel) there are other inflammatory bowel conditions and other things that can also cause bleeding.

If a person has a positive FIT test they will be referred onto the hospital and it usually takes a couple of weeks for them to get in contact to talk about the next steps. Usually a series of different tests are needed to diagnose cancer and it would be unusual for someone to be diagnosed with a FIT test result on it's own.

I would suggest your partner speaks to their doctor to get a better understanding of what will happen next.

I hope you both know more soon and that everything turns out okay.

If you would like to speak with a nurse on our helpline the number to call is 0808 800 4040 and we're here weekdays 9-5.

    Best wishes

    Naomi
