After a kidney removal

Hi

My mother in law who is 81 had a kidney removed several months ago. Since then she tells me she has never had a normal poo, and recently she has started to have regular bouts of diarrhoea. She often has tummy pain. Is this something we should be concerned about?

  • Hi dil2june and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to learn about your mother-in-law’s symptoms following her nephrectomy.

It is quite common to experience bowel issues shortly after surgery; however, we would advise that you speak to your GP or hospital specialist if there are any new or worsening symptoms that continue.

While it’s possible that your mother-in-law’s symptoms are not related to her operation, it’s best to be safe and to have herself checked.

I hope you can get this sorted out soon.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards

    Tina
