Barretts Oesophagus and internal bleeding

Hi

I was recently admitted to the hospital with internal bleeding, due to vomiting black coffee-like granules.  Whilst I was in the hospital, I was told I would probably have an endoscopy.  I was discharged after 2 nights, and still did not have an endoscopy, despite on a couple of occasions being prepared for this procedure.  The doctors regularly did blood pressure checks, and I had some blood tests, and all came back normal.

I still do not know what caused the bleeding (I was informed it was possible GI bleed), and I also experienced severe back pain for a couple of nights when I came out.  Fortunately these symptoms have gone away, today, however I do not think I have been referred as an urgent referral for the endoscopy, although I have been told to take twice the amount of omeprazole I normally take for two weeks My query is whether I should have had the endoscopy or would the medical staff been able to determine if I was suspectable to oesophagul cancer, from the blood tests being normal.   Should I be pushing to have an endoscopy as an urgent referral?

  • Hi there and thanks for your post

I am sorry to hear about your recent hospital admission and appreciate what a worrying time this must be for you.

Unfortunately no one here is in a position to comment into individuals situations about which referral pathway they should be on.

There are guidelines that doctors are supposed to follow for suspected cancer pathway referrals and if you meet this criteria your doctor will refer you this way. Do give your surgery a call to query this and any concerns you may have.

It sounds like the hospital during your admission were assessing you and your condition closely and if they had thought you required an emergency endoscopy they would have carried this out.

It is reassuring you haven't had any further symptoms since coming home and hopefully there isn't anything sinister going on but do speak with your doctor when you can to find out the plan.

I wish you all the best and hope you know more soon.

    Take care

    Naomi

  • As the nurse said but louder if you are worried get in touch with your gp asap the hospital should have sent a report as to what was done etc you can request to see that

If need be gp can refer you to right specialist

Dont risk falling through any gaps the nhs is doing its best but it can happen.

Either way a chat with your gp will be useful in knowing what is what

    Good luck
