Suspected Barrett's Oesophagus with "small nodule"

Hello,

Today I went for a follow-up endoscopy after the initial one in March diagnosed oesophagitis and an ulcer they wanted to make sure healed.  Biopsies taken then came back with only signs of chronic inflammation and no dysplasia, which I was relieved to hear before today's follow-up.

The good news from today was that my ulcer has healed well and the oesophagitis is under control, however I feel that I wasn't given full information about what was seen, as more biopsies were taken for "inflammation in my stomach" but when I look at the report that I got it has the following:

"?C0M1 slight nodular area at 7 o'clock from OGJ"

Now I have had GERD on and off for about 20 years (since I was 23) and have been concerned about developing Barrett's Oesophagus as a result, so I know this report seems to suggest the very thing I have been concerned about (all be it the C0M1 suggests a small area of Barrett's).  I also know that there is still a relatively low risk of cancer with Barrett's, but I am concerned about the nodule, and what the chances may be that it has already become cancerous.  Having had no opportunity to talk to them about this finding I am now waiting for pathology results that I am told will likely take months to come through!  I can only assume that they are not overly concerned as the advice on the report has "Await pathology to determine need for surveillance".

I don't really know what my options are in chasing this up, as if pathology takes months there's not much I can do (although the original biopsies of the ulcer were sent urgently and came back within six weeks).  It leaves me researching nodular Barrett's Oesophagus and drawing a blank when trying to determine whether the nodule calls for more urgency in this situation, or whether it's not as much of a concern as I think it is.  Is there any information about this?

  • Hello and thank you for posting,

Waiting for tests and test results can be an anxious and stressful time. It is good news that your ulcer has healed and the inflammation is being well controlled.

If the doctors were concerned at all that there may be cancer, then biopsies and other tests that may be necessary would be organised urgently.

Only a small number of people with Barrett's oesophagus will go on to develop cancer, and usually over a long period. If it is confirmed that you have Barrett's oesophagus, the doctors will work out if you are at a higher risk of developing cancer and whether you will need to have further surveillance. This will depend on how much of the oesophagus is affected and how abnormal the cells are.

How long you wait for the pathology results will depend on how urgently the biopsy results were requested. If they were sent off as urgent then generally it should be 2-4 weeks rather than months that you are waiting. If you have the name of the consultant who did the endoscopy you could try ringing their secretary as they may be able to speak to the consultant on your behalf.

The hospital will usually write to your GP about the results of your procedure. You may find it helpful to speak with your GP about your results.

I hope this helps and you can get some answers soon. please feel free to get back to us, if you would like to speak with one of our nurses on the helpline we are available Monday to Friday 9am - 5pm.

    Take care,

    Jemma

  • Hi Jemma,

Thanks for your response.  I have made a GP appointment to discuss and I do have the consultants secretary number as I already had an appointment scheduled for December with him.  Will pop back on to update.
