HRT

Hi all, I am nearly 2 years post chemo for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and my GP has advised that I start on HRT gel for some early menopause symptoms. I have been reading into HRT and am obviously concerned about the increased risk with cancer however my GP is concerned about osteoporosis. Can anyone shed some light on HRT post Hodgkins Lymphoma and how they felt on HRT. For some context I’m 36! Thanks x

  • Hi there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear you had treatment for hodgkin lymphoma a couple of years ago and are now experiencing some menopausal symptoms.

As you know some cancer treatments can sometimes cause women to go into an early menopause and it can be a challenging time trying to manage and come to terms with these symptoms.

Whilst there are risks associated with any medication these need to be weighed up against the benefits for each person, looking at the individual circumstances. HRT can be beneficial for many women in managing troublesome menopausal symptoms and can also help to prevent osteoporosis, especially when going through menopause at a younger age.

You may like to look at the sex, fertility and hodgkin lymphoma web page for more information, that also leads into information about hormones and cancer.

There may be other people on here who can share their experiences and lymphoma action also have support groups, but really this is a decision only you and your own doctor can make.

I hope this helps a little but do remember we are also available over the phone on 0808 800 4040, weekdays 9-5 (except bank holidays)

    All the best

    Naomi

  • Hi SunshineQueen,

A very warm welcome to the forum.

I would suggest that the best person to answer this question is your consultant, who has all of your medical details to hand. You might also find it helpful to speak to one of the nurses on this site. Draw up a list of questions first and then you can work through any of your concerns.
