HPV Positive Result

My daughter had her cervical screening results back, it says she is HPV positive, but they found no abnormal cells, so at low risk which is good.

Shes in a relationship for the past two years, which is strong, she said she feels dirty and feels like she's cheated on him but hasn't due to this result, can you help me talk to her to stop her from worrying please.

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

The Human papilloma Virus (HPV) is incredibly common with the majority of women who are sexually active effected at some point in their life. It is normally our own immunity that gets on top of the virus so your daughter is not alone.

You may find it helpful for you and your daughter to read this information on the HPV virus.

The HPV virus can remain dormant in your body for a long time so I would encourage your daughter not to feel guilty.

Your daughter will probably have another Screening in a years time to check that her body has cleared the virus. The test can not be done any sooner. It can take a couple of years to clear the virus. It can help if your daughter is not a smoker as this can make it harder to clear the virus.

I hope that this has helped reassure yourself and your daughter.

Your daughter may find it more helpful to ring and speak to one of the nurses on the helpline. The nurses are here Monday to Friday 9am to 5 pm and the number to ring is Freephone 0808 800 4040.

    All the best,

    Catherine
