Sore tongue after Head & Neck Radiotherapy

I’ve just finished 30 sessions of Radiotherapy for tonsil cancer which spread to neck node - the left hand side of my tongue is sore and looks like the skin may be coming off- is there anything I can do to help ? Thanks

  • Hello and thanks for posting

Radiotherapy to the mouth can be quite harsh on the tongue .The soreness and skin peeling you are experiencing could be due to mucositis. This causes the mouth to develop sores or ulcers and increases the risk of mouth infections. Unfortunately it isn't unusual for the mouth to become painful and swollen and sometimes it can be difficult to eat or drink.

It’s best to let your hospital team know about your mouth issues, and see what they recommend. They may be able to prescribe some mouth gels and mouthwashes to use that will help. They can also prescribe painkillers to help manage the pain .In the meantime we have some tips on managing mouth problems on our website that may also be useful.

I hope this side effect improves for you soon. Give us a ring if you would like to talk any of this over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,
