how reliable is serum 125 antigen test

The maximum result is below 35 but mine is 39. I have cramps, lower back aches and small bleeding from vagina for the last few weeks. I am not going through menopause yet. It does not help my severe anxiety reading that it could be something serious.

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

I am sorry to learn that you are having symptoms that are causing you concern and that you have anxiety as well, this must be difficult.

It sounds like you are referring to the CA125 which measures levels of a protein called CA 125. In some women with cancers such as ovarian cancer, this can be raised. However it can also be raised in noncancerous conditions such as endometriosis, therefore the test is not reliable on its own and further tests are needed before a diagnosis is given.

Your CA125 level is only slightly raised, but only your doctor who assesses you can say what this means for you and whether you need any further tests.

It can be stressful and cause anxiety waiting for tests and test results, and searching for answers on the internet can heighten anxiety. Until you speak with your doctor no one can say what the cause of your symptoms might be. I appreciate this uncertainty is very difficult.

I hope you can get some answers soon. If you would like to speak with one of our nurses on the helpline we are available between 9 am and 5pm Monday to Friday freephone 0808 800 4040.

    Take care,

    Jemma
