Low platelet count

Chemotherapy for my husband has been cancelled this week because of a low platelet count. What can we do to help it get back to normal. Does it usually sort itself out or is it a real problem. Thanks

  • Hi there and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about your husband needing to have chemo.

Unfortunately it isn't unusual for patients to need to have treatment delayed due to low blood counts and this is very normal.

There isn't really anything you can do to increase these counts but they usually will recover and start coming back with a short break in treatment.

I am sure you are aware already but make sure your husband is being careful not to cut or injure himself as there is a risk of bleeding due to the low platelet count. If you or him have any concerns do let his specialist team at the hospital know.

Hopefully your husband count will start rising soon so he can continue with his treatment.

    All the best

    Naomi

  • Thank you so much. That is really helpful. It is hard not to panic at each new setback. Onwards and upwards.
