Advice

My brother (aged 33, non-smoker, physically fit) presented to his GP with a persistent cough lasting over 8 weeks. He was sent for a chest X-ray (which came back clear), but was not referred onwards under urgent cancer referral guidelines. He re-presented with worsening symptoms over several months and was later diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer.

I’m trying to understand whether, in your view, that initial presentation should have met the threshold for referral under NICE or SIGN guidance.

  • Hello, and thank you for posting.

I am so sorry to hear about your brother. That must be a huge shock for you all.

Understandably, you would be questioning what has happened with your brother up to this point to help you try and understand how this diagnosis has happened.

Unfortunately, as a research charity and nurses, we can not give a medical opinion on someone's care.

However, reading the NICE lung referral guidelines may be helpful.

PALS is the patient liaison service used by the NHS if you have further concerns.

Take care, and if you would like to talk anything through with the nurses on the helpline, the number is 0808 800 4040. Lines are open mon-fri, 9-5.

    Sarah.
