2WW Appointment for suspected vulval cancer

Good morning

I've been referenced on a 2WW for suspected vulval cancer.  I chased yesterday as I had not heard about an appointment and have had someone call me today to advise that they cannot see me within 2 weeks timeframe due to not having the staff.

Should I ask my GP to make a referral to another hospital or is this quite common?

Regards

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about your situation and appreciate how difficult it is waiting for things to happen.

You can read the cancer waiting times on our website. Unfortunately, with staffing pressures on the NHS, we are hearing that people are having to wait longer for their appointments.

I'm not sure if the person you spoke to was able to give you some idea of when you may be seen. You could ask them if you could go on a cancellation list. They may contact you if a slot suddenly becomes available at short notice. But unfortunately, this is not guaranteed.

You could ask your GP to refer you to another hospital but it may not speed things up by much. Hopefully, you will be seen in the next couple of weeks.

Many people with suspected cancer may worry that it will spread while they are waiting, but we do know that most cancers grow slowly, so waiting a few weeks does not normally affect how well treatment works.  However, waiting any length of time when you are worried is stressful.

I hope you know more soon. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040, and the lines are open from 9 am till 5 pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
