Should this be urgent breast clinic referral?

Hi

In 2022 I had a mammogram & US to investigate a thickened, lumpy area of my left breast. I was advised no abnormalities seen and just normal breast tissue. No biopsies taken.

Over time this area has gotten much bigger and is now a very large lumpy area. I visited my GP over two weeks ago and they said they would refer me to the breast clinic. They didn’t say if it would be urgent or routine and at the time I didn’t think to ask.

I still haven’t received an appointment letter and I’m wondering if this is classified as urgent or routine referral? Wondering if I should call GP to chase but I hate causing any fuss?

I live in Scotland and in 2022 I received the breast clinic appointment within 2 weeks.

  • Hi Nuttyb, I’m not sure about Scotland but I think if it’s referred to the breast clinic it’s on a 2 week referral. If it goes over than maybe give them a ring to find out more. Wishing you well! Xx

  • Hi there and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about your concerns and that you are waiting to be reviewed in the breast clinic.

There could be a number of reasons for this lump other than cancer so try not to over think things until this is investigated properly.

Unfortunately many people are waiting much longer to be assessed in breast units but it is worth calling your GP surgery to check which pathway you were referred onto.

If you were referred onto the suspected cancer pathway you could then contact the breast unit to ask when you are likely to be seen.

It can be an anxious time waiting and not knowing what is going on and I hope you know more soon.

    Best wishes

    Naomi

  • Thank you for both your replies. I called my GP surgery & I’m waiting for a call back as they couldn’t see a referral in the system.
