Swollen lymph nodes + eczema. What could it be?

Hi, just wanted to see if my symptoms warrant a GP appointment. I've suffered quite badly with diagnosed eczema from birth and have also dealt with frequent infections. At the moment, a patch on my top lip and my cheek are infected on and off, at least for a few months. I've noticed that the lymph nodes just under my ears are swollen and solid. They aren't visible but I can definitely feel them. Usually, I wouldn't worry so much as I know a few eczema sufferers who have chronically enlarged lymph nodes during flare ups, but I also got thinking about one of the lymph nodes in my armpit. With my menstrual cycle, it swells just before and a few days throughout my period. It can become incredibly tender, but it always shrinks down (has been happening as long as I remember).

That being said, I've heard lymph nodes can stay swollen after large infections and I did have a full bad eczema infection about six months ago. My parents have also suffered periodically from swollen lymph nodes, and my nan in particular (a nurse) had always told my dad not to worry.

I did go to the GP for a separate issue (checking out my moles) and the Doctor didn't say anything about my neck appearing swollen, even after she checked a mole there.

Regardless, culd this be a sign of cancer? Or am I worrying.

  • Hi there and thanks for the post

It can be worrying noticing lymph nodes are swollen but as you say often enough they are due to a current or previous infection. Also in thinner people that can be felt much more easily.

If they come up and down in your situation and due to your ongoing eczema fare ups and infection they could well be linked to this.

However no one here can say for sure if this is the case and if you are concerned about this or a specific lymph node do speak to your GP about it. Whilst you went to see a doctor recently about a mole you have they wouldn't necessarily been checking your lymph nodes at the same time.

To be on the safe side and for your own peace of mind it is worth getting this checked out.

    Best wishes
