HPV Cells

Hello, i’m just confused.. around 2017 I had a colposcopy and was diagnosed with a cervical erosion. Since then I’ve had it burned out and something painted on to help remove it. (This year) I was still having the symptoms and went back, it was still there so finally they done a punch biopsy. I’ve been having smears and they all come back normal but the biopsy has come back saying I have hpv and they will send me for a smear in a year. I’m just worried now the smear is still going to be normal as they always are but the cells are still there it just isn’t picking it up. My guess is it wasn’t an erosion. I don’t really know what to do at this stage…

  • Hi there and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about the ongoing symptoms you have and can appreciate that you are worried.

At colposcopy they are able to view the cervix closely alongside any abnormal looking areas. If there had been any abnormal cells this should have been picked up by the biopsy they took.

You can have HPV without any abnormal cells which is why when HPV is picked up they will recheck after a year to make sure the HPV has cleared and that no abnormal cells have developed in that time. Cervical erosions ( ectropians) are common and benign ( non cancerous condition) that aren't associated with cervical cancer. They can sometimes return after treatment.

If you are concerned that something has been missed you could discuss this with your GP and ask if you can get a second opinion.

I hope you can get some peace of mind soon.

    Best wishes

    Naomi
