Breast lump

I had a slight redness to my left breast a few days ago I noticed in the mirror.felt what I feel is two lumps at 3 oclock position,my breasts have always been naturally lumpy,I do self exams but find it hard to distinguish what's normal and what's not.managed to see my gp today and he felt around sort of and prescribed me with flucloxacillin 4 times a day?he feels it's a blocked milk duct even though I've never had children, says I'm too young for BC I'm 38,opinions?

  • Hi Worried30s,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

Not all lumps are cancerous. Many turn out to be benign cysts or fibroadenoma - probably a more logical solution, if you have always had lumpy breasts. You have done the right thing by consulting your GP. Give the Flucloxacillin a chance to reduce these first, but, if the lumps are still there, once you've finished the course, do go back and ask for referral to the breast clinic. The incidence of breast cancer is greater in older people, but it seems to be affecting an increased number of younger people in recent years. The only way to be certain that there is nothing untoward, is to have some scans to show the type of lump and a biopsy to check whether or not there is any cancer present.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

  • Thankyou for replying,Iam someone who also suffers with anxiety and it goes straight to my digestive system.since finding these lumps I can barely eat or sleep,I'm not present in anything going on around me it's like everything has stopped.im trying to rationalise in my head it could be a number of benign conditions but my mind keeps catastrophizing it's awful :(

  • Hi Worried,

Unfortunately, most of us suffer the symptoms you describe, while waiting for results. We also tend to give reign to our over-active imaginations, which take us to all sorts of dark places and we seem incapable of rationalising. Fortunately, things are seldom as bad as we imagine, at this stage.

Stay positive - and here's hoping for good news.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • It's so hard to stay positive but I'm trying,I will update with any news xx

  • Hi Worried,

Waiting for a diagnosis, is possibly the most harrowing part of a cancer journey. Try to preoccupy your mind with other things - not easy, I know! Don't hesitate to return to your GP if this doesn't settle.

I look forward to your update and hope that it'll be good news.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hello Worried30s and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear that you are worried about your breasts.

There are many benign (not cancer) breast conditions that women can get particularly in your 30's.

Blocked milk ducts can happen in your 30's but it is more common as women get older.

Lumpy breasts are common so try not to overthink it for now. I would take the prescribed antibiotics and if the redness continues or if you have any further concerns then do go back and see your GP again.

I am sure that if your GP felt you needed further investigations they would refer you to a breast clinic.

I do hope that it all settles down soon.

You are very welcome to ring and chat through any of this with one of the nurses on the helpline. The number to ring is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine

  • Thank you for replying,I'm just struggling with it.in my head I'm already seeing myself having chemo and preparing for the worse :( the doctor I feel didn't really do a thorough examination.he had me sitting on a bed with my arm down and just prodded the side but barely, told me what he thought and gave me the antibiotics. I can feel 2 lumps, one when you brush your fingers lightly over the skin and one harder gravel like one basically underneath the top one but under the nipple.the top one feels hard but smooth ish,to me anyway.i don't have nipple discharge per say but if I squeeze it then pus comes out like when you squeeze a pimple in your face.i just can't help wondering what antibiotics are going to do to two hard lumps :( they finish Friday then I will be going back to the gp.im on flucloxacillin and they have wrecked my digestive system.sorry for the rant.

  • Hello again and thanks for getting back in touch

We appreciate what an anxious time this is for you. Sit tight for now until the end of the week and then go back and see if you can see a different doctor.

I am sure if there is no change they will refer you to the breast unit for further checks.

I hope you know more soon and that everything will be okay for you.

    Take care

    Naomi
