Fathers lung cancer diagnosis

Hi, to all.

In December 2024 my father had a routine follow up scan for bowel cancer which was surgically removed in 2021. The scan showed a lesion on his lung and since, he has been up and down Wales for 6 months to have CT scans and biopsies.

Yesterday I drove him to Swansea, a 250 mile round trip and unfortunately he was told that his preferred option - surgery - was not possible. When being presented with CT scans from January and March, along with an X ray at request yesterday, we could see the progression of the problem and alarmingly, from circa 40mm size in March, a 90mm size in May.

We were asked to contact a more "local" hospital to expedite the surgeons request for a new CT scan pre radio or chemo therapy. Having spent many hours on the phone today, this request does not yet exist and seeing the progression of the problem via CT scans, and hitting a brick wall today desperately trying to find a booking, I am lost.

My parents have done nothing except follow instructions, travelling all over Wales for scans, biopsies and even physio tests to acertain whether my father was fit enough for surgery; physio tests that took place AFTER the March CT scan which we were told yesterday already demonstrated surgery to not be possible. So for 2 months we have been wasting time, the tumor has grown significantly and I cannot even get anyone to find this new CT scan booking.

As a result I would like to look for a private specialist, lung cancer, chest wall and cancer has moved into the 2nd rib. Last approx size 90mm.

Location is Mid Wales.

I would appreciate any recommendations.

Thank you

  • Hello DCC87 and thank you for posting,

I am sorry to learn of your father's situation this must be very difficult for you and your family.

Unfortunately, we cannot recommend specialists or hospitals. We have information about private cancer treatment which may be helpful to read. Goprivate.com provides information about private specialists and hospitals and specialist.info provides a directory of specialists.

It might also be worth speaking with your father's GP for advice as they know his situation.

I hope this helps in some way. Please feel free to get back to us. if you would like to speak with one of the nurses on the helpline you would be welcome to call us. We are available between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday and the freephone number to call is 0808 800 4040.

    Take care,

    Jemma
