Anxious about Mum’s colonoscopy

My mum has had her bowel screening results back and has a colonoscopy next week. I’m her only child and I feel so anxious about what the test will find. I’m not sure how I will feel if she has a diagnosis of cancer. I know I shouldn’t be worrying about things I can’t control, but I feel overwhelmed with anxiety. I’m trying to stay positive for her sake. Do you have any suggestions on how I can stay positive until next week?

  • Hi there jazzyjayne and thanks for getting in touch with us.

I am sorry to hear your mum is currently undergoing some tests and this of course must be a worrying time for you.

Whilst no one here can say what the colonoscopy will or won't show up do remember many people who have a positive bowel screening test won't have cancer.

Cancer screening programmes are all about picking up abnormality that can be further investigated to find out more. There are other reasons for blood in the stools other than cancer and the colonoscopy will help to find this out.

If and when a cancer is picked up through screening it is hoped it is at an earlier stage where it can be successfully treated.

As difficult as it may be try not to over think things for now and take each day as it comes. Distracting your mind by keeping yourself busy and your thoughts on other things can help.

I hope your mum's appointment goes well and that she will be okay.

    Take care

    Naomi
