colorectal surgery clinic

My mum had to go in for piles a while back internal and external

She had bloated stomach and has ibs

They did a ovarian cancer screen and nothing came up

The last time with piles they were infected and they said she would be having a colonoscopy

She has had a letter today saying - colorectal surgery clinic

She hadn't lost weight, always has loose stools or is constipated to the point she is rithing in agony

Can anyone advise me of what will happen at this appointment so we don't google

Thank you x

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about what's been happening with your mum. This must be a worrying time for you both.

I'm not exactly sure what will happen when your mum goes to her colorectal appointment as doctors can vary in this. But is very likely that they will take a full medical history and do a physical examination.

Depending on the assessment the doctor may order further tests and ask to see her again when the results are available. It may take a couple of weeks to get other tests organised. I don't think that it is common to get everything sorted in one visit. If they suggest a colonoscopy, it can take a couple of weeks to get the biopsy results.

You might find that the doctor is able to give your mum an opinion of what they think is the matter on the day, and there may be no need for further tests. But if they are unsure you may find that they are reluctant to say much at this first appointment. Please do not assume the worst if the doctor asks for more tests. This is quite common and it does not always mean that anything serious is wrong.

I hope this is of some use. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
