Radiotherapy

I have had 3 sessions of radiotherapy on my stomach area to clear up a couple of nodules from a previous operation for cancer of the uterus six years ago. My body isn’t coping with the therapy.

I felt nausea after the first session which I now  have sickness tablets for but yesterday morning woke with a uti . I have 5 weeks ahead of me will this continue the whole time.

Any help would be appreciated because I don’t think I can keep going with the therapy.

  • Hi there lewis44 and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear you are currently undergoing radiotherapy and are experiencing some unpleasant side effects.

Everyone's body is different in the way it is affected by cancer treatment but unfortunately in the area you are having the radiation aimed at can cause the side effects you are experiencing.

There is more information about abdominal and pelvic radiotherapy side effects on our website, so do take a look at this.

You have done the right thing by mentioning the nausea to your team and you need to do the same with the UTI symptoms you now have. They can assess you and find ways to manage this for you.

There are usually ways to manage most side effects to make the treatment as bearable as possible and it is very unusual for patients to need to stop treatment completely.

Do let the team know you are struggling with this so they can help you through this difficult time. Hopefully if they can get on top of any side effects you are experiencing you will find you can continue with the radiotherapy treatment.

I hope you feel more comfortable soon.

Do get back in touch if you wish and you can also call us on 0808 800 4040 if you prefer.

    Take care

    Naomi
