Thyroid op on my neck

  1. I can not fly for 5 weeks after my op but the date thay give me is the 27th may and I fly on the 13th of June so I have had to cancel my op untell I come back off holiday which will be July the 17th. So I just want to know would the cancer spread a lot more in that time
  • I'm not a nurse, so take their answers before mine but I did have thyroid cancer and...generally, it is very slow acting. I probably had it for five years before it was noticed - I don't know for sure but certainly, looking at photos there was a nodule on my neck that long - and when I was diagnosed, the consultant said "it's not going to do anything in the immediate future."

But the best person to ask about this is the doctor. It's unlikely a few weeks or months would make much difference but it depends on the type of thyroid cancer you have and then there is a convenience thing. When would they be able to reschedule your operation for? Would you be waiting months for a new date? So I'd check with them so you can make an informed decision.

  • Thank you for your reply and I will have to ask my doctor

  • Hello and thanks for posting

In most cases, thyroid cancer grows very slowly. So, while it’s always best to treat cancer as soon as possible, a delay of a few weeks is probably unlikely to make an overall difference.

However the best person to ask about this would be your specialist as they will know the type and extent of your thyroid cancer and will be better placed to advise you further.

I hope this helps. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,
